  Amsterdam @ Holland Monday 13th June 2005
As we were flying out from there in the evening, our last day was spent in Amsterdam. Abi spent a couple of hours in the Rijksmuseum (art gallery) and I had a tour of the flower market and lots of back streets. After having thunder storms the night before (and visions of waking up in the morning and the whole country flooded) the weather turned out quite nice by the afternoon/evening and it was really great to stroll around the capital for a few hours. Having seen the prices in some of the shops I think I really need to return sometime soon for a shopping trip! The one thing which suprised me the most about Holland is the amount of things in English. A lot of signs are in english, and not just in the touristy areas. I found it quite hard having dutch conversations, partly due to only knowing how to say thankyou and nod, but mainly because if you mention an english word everyone will start talking in perfect english. Very useful, but I'd like to get the chance to learn a bit whilst there too! There was quite a sense of satisfaction on the few occassions where I managed to come across as just being a quiet ducth person! Before taking the flight home we stopped off at a vegetarian restuarant and had a nice (i gotta think of a better word to use than that!) meal. The flight was thankfully a lot more pleasent than the first, and I look forward to returning again! My first impression of Holland was a very good one, I prefer it to France and Spain where I've been many times. Being vegan in Holland is vastly easier than other places I've been, and on a par with the UK these days. I could quite happily live there :)
