My second garden @ My Place, Coventry, West Midlands, UK Wednesday 21st June 2006
I've always quite liked gardening and the idea of it. My first attempt at making do with what I have (a tiny balcony barely large enough for a couple of chairs) was a bit of a disaster; consisting of buying a few ready potted plants and leaving them to die. Being outside I thought they'd get enough water from rain, but it's more sheltered than I thought and they just went crispy. I bought a book on herbs about 6 months ago, but was really waiting till I have a house with proper garden before having another go. This of course is kind of lazy, so I was really pleasantly surprised to open my curtains one Saturday morning and find a herb fairy had planted a load in pots whilst I was out the night before! They were a birthday present from Cherry and look magnificent. In the few weeks I've had them they've doubled in size and are growing every day. My lounge now effectively extends out an extra couple of feet and gives me something nice to look at when I walk in in the morning other than the site of city centre buildings. I'm not sure of the air quality round here but I had my first bit of mint last night in a cocktail and it smelt and tasted pretty damn good. Several times now I've sat in my balcony doorway late in the evening and admired the view. Besides aesthetics I'm looking forward to them being big enough to not notice bits chopped off for cooking. All in all a really great birthday present :)
