Ullswater: Howtown to Glenridding @ Ullswater, Cumbria Saturday 22nd July 2006
Following on with our theme of slightly longer walks we decided to take the path from Howtown (Eastern edge of Ullswater) to Glenridding - approx 7 miles. One of Cherry's neighbours is works as a skipper for the Ullswater steamers so we got a free boat ride from Glenridding to Howtown (that we had to run for because we had issues finding parking!), which was very pleasant. So pleasant in fact that we contemplated staying on for a cruise up to Pooley Bridge and back (which we later wished we'd stuck with!), but were feeling semi-energetic so decided against. The walk itself wasn't that gruelling, but it was incredibly hot and in our rush from the car to the boat we'd managed to not grab the water! We had some water that we bought on the boat, but by the time we arrived at Glenridding after many stops we were gagging for liquid and each downed a pint of lemonade. When we thought we were about half way we found that we'd only done about 2 miles! :O. Then what we thought was the half way point (where we had walked to from Glenridding earlier this year) turned out to be less than. Whinging aside though the views were however spectacular - I'd quite like to do the walk again some time with more water, a picnic and in slightly cooler weather (this autumn?) so we can enjoy it properly. It should have taken about 2 hours, but after going paddling twice, several sit downs and a couple of lie downs it took more like 4! All in all it was a good afternoon out, I'll be doing proper walks before long and this kind of one will be the pre-lunch stroll ;)
