La Hougue Bie @ Jersey, UK Wednesday 23rd August 2006
Older than the Egyptian pyramids but arguably not as spectacular; La Hougue Bie is the site of a 13m high 6000 year old Neolithic burial mound. Like all good pagan sites it has a Christian church built on top and formally had a large tower which was knocked down by archeologists who wanted to look at the burial chamber (classic example of desecrate one historical feature to understand another better in the absence of more advanced techniques that will no doubt exist in the near future). During the German occupation a small command bunker was built on the site and part of this is open as a museum.

For some bizarre reason the museum visit and video was set to extremely loud 70's pop music and the co-ordinated gyration of St Ouen's Dance School members. When they said dancers we assumed some kind of ancient neolithic reenactment, so the reality was some what out of place. There was however a slightly stoned looking young man dressed up in neolithic gear in a hut whom you could answer questions to. There also seemed to be a rather uneducational trial of plastic instruments on bits of string that had nothing to do with the monument. As a site it's well worth a visit, but perhaps a little overpriced (almost 6 quid for an adult) and with some bizarre twists! :O
