Great Mell Fell @ North Lakes, Cumbria Saturday 26th August 2006
Our afternoon walk - Cherry's new local and my first fell. It took a while to find the carpark, infact we had to return home to get the OS map (TomTom as ever wasn't much help in the countryside). It was drizzling with rain most of the time but was clear on the top and the views were great! We saw a few walkers from a distance when we were first looking where to park the car then met a couple of people when we were setting off. Other than that (and the sheep) we were alone. It took just over an hour to reach the top - a combination of being rather unfit, wearing unsuitable shoes and walking in the wrong direction for the first 10 mins (we went right at the national trust sign and ended up trying to climb through the forest for several minutes before realising that therer must be a better way!). I had my gps with me and had planned to a) plot the route and b) for the first time start geocoding photos, however having recorded the entire route the unit crashed whilst driving home. It appears that the rather shite software only writes the NMEA data to file when it stops logging and stores it in memory whilst in progress. This explains why a) it ran out of memory/crashed and b) didn't write anything to log file (on 2GB SD)! I'm already coding my own software for parsing log data, I may hafta knock together a data logger too....
