Hatton Locks @ Hatton, Warwickshire Sunday 8th October 2006
Faced with a weekend alone, a desire to get a bit of exercise/break in my new walking boots and a need to somehow acquire some sloes for Sloe Gin I took a trip to Hatton Locks, where it had been rumoured that sloes were in abundance....indeed they were! I went via Solihull to pick up some 1 litre preserving jars and to curb crawl properties on the market in villages like Knowle, then set off on my walk from Hatton Country World along the Grand Union Canal toepath. There are circular walks but I just went from the start of the 21 locks to the end and back again - approx 4 miles. It was a very pleasent afternoon and despite trying to be as surreptitious as possible in my sloe picking I was spotted by a veteran brewer and had a pleasent discussion about the joys of sloe gin making. I also found blackberries growing, which quenched my thirst and saved a trip to the tea rooms! I quite fancy the idea of spending a year or two dossing on a canal boat touring the country, but I've been on one before and experienced locks etc so wasn't really there for that side of things. Very picturesque however, I even took some photos on the walk back ;)
