New Toy: Meade ETX70AT Telescope @ My Old House, Greenstead, Colchester, Essex, UK Wednesday 22nd January 2003
I first saw these scopes a couple of years ago and immediately wanted one. The thoughts of standing out in the cold for hours on end with star charts getting frustrated because you can't find anything just doesn't appeal to me, but the thoughts of a fully automatic telescope with onboard computer really brings astronomy to the world of the lazy slob. Tell it your position on the earth, the date and time, point it north and it knows where everything is in the sky. Some of the newer models have built in GPS and electronic compass! It knows the location of 1400 objects and can motor itself into position by choosing what you want to look at with the remote control. You can ask it if any satellites or space stations will pass over in the next 6 hours and set an alarm if there will be one. Then before it appears it will allign itself on the horizon where it is to appear and track it across the sky. I can even hook it up to my laptop and control it via there, download new software and add locations of new satellites, rocket launches etc. However best of all, I can spy through people's windows on the other side of the valley from my bedroom window :)

The handheld unit. Unfortunately i can't show it with the display on, as the only batteries I have to power the scope were powering my digital camera when the picture was taken! - Views: 334 - Comments: 0
